Disney Moves Black Widow to 2021, Soul Sticks to November 20 Theatrical Release

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Studios announced its latest round of release date changes, as the studio continues to adapt to the challenging theatrical distribution landscape of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The most high profile change on the schedule concerns Marvel’s Black Widow, previously scheduled as the next major studio release in North America on November 6. The title will now debut in domestic theaters on May 7, 2021. The change produced a number of ripple effects across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, pushing Eternals (from 2/12/21 to 11/5/21) and Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (from 5/7/21 to 7/9/21) further down the schedule.

Other notables changes include an extra year’s wait for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story (from 12/18/20 to 12/10/21), while 20th Century Studios’ The King’s Man is moved up a week (from 2/26/21 to 2/12/21).

Pixar’s Soul, currently scheduled for November 20, 2020, is keeping its date and now becomes the next major Hollywood title expected to hit theaters in North America.

Kinepolis Group to Open MJR Locations in Michigan, New Theater in Haarlem, Netherlands

Theater chain Kinepolis has opened its new Centrum Schalkwijk location in Haarlem, Netherlands today, October 8—though its inauguration has been postponed to a later date due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, the chain’s 10 MJR Digital Cinemas locations— acquired by Kinepolis in October 2019 , marking the chain’s first foray into the American market—will reopen this weekend. Weekend Forecast: Solstice Studios’ Unhinged and Nolan’s Inception 10th Anniversary Event Set to Welcome Moviegoers Back to Domestic Theaters

To quote Lennon and McCarthy, it’s been a long and winding road. As of this weekend, though, major theater chains across the United States will finally be back up and running with the domestic market’s first wide release since March. Following months of speculation and delayed reopening plans, Solstice Studios’ Unhinged is the film setting the stage for more to come in the weeks and months ahead. It’s a watershed moment oft-planned by the startup distributor throughout the summer as spikes of the COVID-19 pandemic across the country resulted in multiple studio and exhibitor delays, but one that will finally come to pass — and one with significant meaning for exhibitor support.
