Disney Moves Black Widow to 2021, Soul Sticks to November 20 Theatrical Release

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Studios announced its latest round of release date changes, as the studio continues to adapt to the challenging theatrical distribution landscape of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The most high profile change on the schedule concerns Marvel’s Black Widow, previously scheduled as the next major studio release in North America on November 6. The title will now debut in domestic theaters on May 7, 2021. The change produced a number of ripple effects across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, pushing Eternals (from 2/12/21 to 11/5/21) and Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (from 5/7/21 to 7/9/21) further down the schedule.

Other notables changes include an extra year’s wait for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story (from 12/18/20 to 12/10/21), while 20th Century Studios’ The King’s Man is moved up a week (from 2/26/21 to 2/12/21).

Pixar’s Soul, currently scheduled for November 20, 2020, is keeping its date and now becomes the next major Hollywood title expected to hit theaters in North America.

DEATH ON THE NILE (20th) previously dated on 10/23/20 moves to 12/18/20

Cinemark Q3 Earnings Reports: CEO Mark Zoradi Speaks on “Dynamic Theatrical Windows,” the Success of Private Rentals

Many of the questions asked of Cinemark CEO Mark Zoradi during this morning’s quarterly earnings call were about streaming and theatrical exclusivity—leading the CEO to offer some updates on their evolving windows policy as well as clarify other points about the chain’s status moving into the fourth quarter of 2020. At AMC’s Q3 earnings call, held earlier this week, CEO Adam Aron touted the chain’s deal with Universal, which can see the theatrical exclusivity window for that studio’s titles shrink from the traditional 72 days to as little as 17 at AMC theaters. Cinemark, Zoradi announced, will join AMC in playing upcoming Universal and Focus releases The Croods: A New Age , Freaky , and Let Him Go when they open in theaters this month. Cineworld, owner of Regal, the country’s second largest chain, has made no announcements about reopening the bulk of their theaters in the coming weeks, though none of the handful of Regal theaters open in NY and CA list showtimes for Focus Features’ ...

Weekend Box Office Forecast: Will Come Play Dethrone Honest Thief for a First Place Halloween Debut?

The domestic market is grinding through what’s long been evident to become a slow portion of the theatrical reopening phase ever since major studios fled the fall season, delaying their tentpoles due to the effects of the pandemic. As October comes to a close, only one new film is heading into wide release this weekend: Focus Features’ Come Play . The PG-13 horror thriller is ideally timed for Halloween weekend with the holiday landing on a Saturday this year. Boasting a short 96-minute run time, the film’s accessibility is a strength as it aims to draw fans of the genre at the peak of spooky season. Come Play ‘s marketing footprint has been respectable for a non-major studio release (although Focus is parented by Universal). Social media metrics are modest, but the film has generated over 8 million views from its official trailer page on YouTube since debuting in late August. Current models suggest it should outperform fellow genre pic The Empty Man , which bowed to lukewarm results ...

This Week on the Boxoffice Podcast: UNIC’s Laura Houlgatte-Abbott on the Second Wave of Cinema Closures in Europe

In this week’s episode of the Boxoffice Podcast, Boxoffice Pro Editorial Director Daniel Loria and Deputy Editor Rebecca Pahle were joined by UNIC CEO Laura Houlgatte-Abbott, who broke down the still-evolving situation in Europe. Several countries there have been subject to a second wave of shutdowns —either total or in select regions. As Houlgatte-Abbott notes in the Boxoffice Podcast’s exclusive interview, those lockdowns are not targeted at cinemas, which to this point have not been identified as a site of Covid-19 spread. Earlier in the podcast, Loria and Pahle break down news and insights gleaned from earnings calls that have taken place over the last week, with AMC , Marcus, Imax , and Kinepolis updating their investors on the state of their respective businesses.
